Understanding the Mind-Body Connection: How Emotional Health Impacts Physical Wellness

Most people have experienced anxiety, grief, or depression at some point in their lives. 

The World Health Organization even found that about 70% of people have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives. The mental and emotional stress is obvious in times like these, but did you know your mental health can also impact your physical health in a big way?

According to Dr. Gabor Maté, “Trauma is not what happens to you; it’s what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you.” 

You see, trauma is stored in our bodies. Insomnia, brain fog, fatigue, muscle tension, chest tightness, and chronic pain, and even heart palpitations are ways your body can speak to you. 

Therefore, healing the body is part of the emotional healing process. 

If the mental distress isn’t treated, it can lead to chronic, long-term physical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, autoimmune conditions, breathing problems, weight issues, hormonal dysregulation, and gastrointestinal issues.

The mind-body connection is so important to us because our bodies tell our brain what to think 80% of the time! This means we sense emotions in our bodies before we experience them in our brains. 

But, the problem is, we were taught to push them down and “soldier on” instead of acknowledging them and allowing them to move through us. 

We actually metabolize emotions similarly to metabolizing food. It’s a chemical reaction! This is why it is so important to understand and acknowledge the mind-body connection. 

If our mind is suffering, we’re more likely to experience physical disease—and vice versa. When you know this, you can take steps to heal your mind as a way to also heal your body. 

Try these strategies to improve your mind-body connection: 

  • Hug a loved one for 5 seconds and notice what changes in your body 
  • Scan your body for specific sensations starting at your head and ending at your feet 
  • Pray and meditate, incorporating phrases like, “Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life.” (Psalm 23:6)
  • Dancing
  • Walk or move in nature 
  • Yoga and stretching 
  • Breathwork

Whole person health = true health
