Have you chosen a word to embody this year?
If not, we wanted to offer you one. And even if you have, perhaps you let it complement the other words youâve chosen.
“Health.”
That choice probably isnât a surprise coming from us! But, year after year, itâs worth reiterating. Often, we need to proclaim health as a priority in order to actually make it one. We need to remind ourselves to intentionally care for our well-being.
As youâve probably experienced, itâs so easy for health to fall low down on our list of priorities if we donât catch it. The truth is, health has to be an active intention before it can be passive.
To remind yourself of this, try physically putting the word âhealthâ somewhere you will see it each day. It could be on your fridge, whiteboard, desk, mirror, or bedside table. Let it be a reminder to you that your health deserves your attention, evenâespeciallyâwhen life gets busy.
If you do choose to embrace the word âhealthâ this year, maybe you also take some time to bless your home with it. Use the word to invite Godâs presence and protection over each room. This practice is one of our favorite ways to start the year. Of course, you can do it again and again, in any month.
Remember, health isnât only for appointments and prescriptions. Itâs a lifestyle. Itâs in the way we interact with the world, with each other, and with ourselves.
âBeloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.â – 3 John 1:2
This year, let your health guide you. đ
You can get started today by trying some of our simple recommendations or by learning about how we can help uncover the root cause of your symptoms. You can find all of that below!

Try swapping:
- M&Ms â Unreal
- Betty Crocker â Simple Mills
- Nestle cookie dough â Cappello’s
- Lay’s chips â Siete
Breathing Exercise for Anxiety
You canât out-logic your anxiety.
Has someone ever told you to âcalm downâ or âyou have nothing to be anxious aboutâ when youâre stressed? Odds are your nervous system didnât respond so well to this conversationâŠ
To regulate our nervous system we have to speak its language. When you think of the parasympathetic nervous system, think of a parachuteâwhich is designed to slow everything down and provide a safe landing. When we actively slow our breathing, it communicates to our brain, âIf we can take this long to breathe, we must not be in immediate danger.â
Try this simple exercise below and pay attention to any internal shifts:
Breathe in for 4 counts
Breathe out for 6
Breathe in for 4
Breathe out for 6
Repeat x 3
Treating Mental and Emotional Health
We all experience mental distress at some time or another. It can show up as chronic stress, anxiety, depression, a lack of motivation, unhealthy relationships, chronic pain, or physical illnessâjust to name some common struggles. While challenging, itâs important to learn how to acknowledge these difficult emotions. Doing so allows them to move through us. If we ignore the emotions, our body starts manifesting physical symptoms.
Thatâs what weâre here for. We use a holistic approach to counseling to help you improve your mental well-being.
