Simple Ways to Prioritize Your Health This Year

Mental Well-being

A modern kitchen with a sleek stainless steel fridge serving as the focal point. On the fridge door, a large piece of paper is attached with magnets, displaying the word 'health' written in bold, elegant cursive. Surrounding the note are small colorful sticky notes, a few photographs, and minimalistic decorative magnets. The kitchen features clean, light-colored cabinetry, wooden countertops, and open shelving adorned with potted plants and neutral decor. Soft natural light streams through a large window, illuminating the space and highlighting a bowl of fresh fruit on the wooden island in the foreground. The atmosphere feels fresh, inspiring, and intentional.

Have you chosen a word to embody this year?

If not, we wanted to offer you one. And even if you have, perhaps you let it complement the other words you’ve chosen.

“Health.”

That choice probably isn’t a surprise coming from us! But, year after year, it’s worth reiterating. Often, we need to proclaim health as a priority in order to actually make it one.  We need to remind ourselves to intentionally care for our well-being.

As you’ve probably experienced, it’s so easy for health to fall low down on our list of priorities if we don’t catch it. The truth is, health has to be an active intention before it can be passive.

An organized desk setup featuring a sleek computer monitor with a small card displaying the handwritten word 'health' attached to the corner. In the foreground, an open notebook with notes written in cursive is accompanied by a black-and-gold pen resting on its pages. A steaming white ceramic mug sits on the desk, adding a cozy touch. A potted green plant in a terracotta pot is positioned to the right, while soft natural light filters in through a nearby window, creating a calm and inspiring atmosphere.

To remind yourself of this, try physically putting the word “health” somewhere you will see it each day. It could be on your fridge, whiteboard, desk, mirror, or bedside table. Let it be a reminder to you that your health deserves your attention, even—especially—when life gets busy.

If you do choose to embrace the word “health” this year, maybe you also take some time to bless your home with it. Use the word to invite God’s presence and protection over each room. This practice is one of our favorite ways to start the year. Of course, you can do it again and again, in any month.

Remember, health isn’t only for appointments and prescriptions. It’s a lifestyle. It’s in the way we interact with the world, with each other, and with ourselves.

“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” – 3 John 1:2

This year, let your health guide you. 🙏

You can get started today by trying some of our simple recommendations or by learning about how we can help uncover the root cause of your symptoms. You can find all of that below!

Healthy Food Swap of the Month

Though these are not “health foods,” they are cleaner versions made with better ingredients. Perfection is an unrealistic aim, and we all have times when we are going to choose a treat!

Breathing Exercise for Anxiety

You can’t out-logic your anxiety.

Has someone ever told you to “calm down” or “you have nothing to be anxious about” when you’re stressed? Odds are your nervous system didn’t respond so well to this conversation

To regulate our nervous system we have to speak its language. When you think of the parasympathetic nervous system, think of a parachute—which is designed to slow everything down and provide a safe landing. When we actively slow our breathing, it communicates to our brain, “If we can take this long to breathe, we must not be in immediate danger.”

A woman sits calmly on a caramel-colored leather couch, her eyes gently closed as she practices mindful breathing. She places one hand on her chest and the other on her abdomen, symbolizing connection with her breath. She wears a dark brown knit sweater and blue jeans, exuding a relaxed and grounded energy. Soft white textured pillows are arranged next to her, adding comfort to the scene. Behind her, a modern abstract painting hangs on the light-colored wall, completing the tranquil and introspective atmosphere.

Try this simple exercise below and pay attention to any internal shifts:

Breathe in for 4 counts
Breathe out for 6
Breathe in for 4
Breathe out for 6
Repeat x 3

Treating Mental and Emotional Health

We all experience mental distress at some time or another. It can show up as chronic stress, anxiety, depression, a lack of motivation, unhealthy relationships, chronic pain, or physical illness—just to name some common struggles. While challenging, it’s important to learn how to acknowledge these difficult emotions. Doing so allows them to move through us.  If we ignore the emotions, our body starts manifesting physical symptoms.

That’s what we’re here for. We use a holistic approach to counseling to help you improve your mental well-being.
