Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and PTSD

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

According to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects millions of people throughout the United States.  There is a direct correlation between PTSD and trauma with symptoms commonly manifesting within three months of a traumatic event.  PTSD can lead to other symptoms including anxiety, depression and substance abuse.

Counseling is often recommended for individuals affected by PTSD.  Clinical Christian counseling and/or a pastoral counselor may be sought by people of faith struggling with PTSD. Faithfully Guided Health Center has licensed pastoral counselors and mental health counselors that provide clinical Christian counseling in a friendly and safe setting.  A complementary treatment for PTSD that our Christian counseling professionals often recommend is hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy accelerates the body’s ability to heal itself. It increases the amount of oxygen in the body to promote healing and decrease inflammation.  Recent studies indicate that hyperbaric oxygen therapy, when supervised by a qualified medical professional, can benefit patients with PTSD.  In fact, the Veterans Administration (VA) even offers this treatment for some veterans living with PTSD.

It’s important to note that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not a stand-alone treatment for PTSD. When treating a patient with PTSD, we often recommend clinical Christian counseling in addition to hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
